God is our Heavenly Father and we are His Sons.
When we accept the Lord as our Savior, we are adopted into sonship to God. We are no longer slaves but sons of God!
The Word of God says in Genesis 1:26 – Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
As humans, we are first and foremost spiritual beings, with a soul, dressed in a body. Our spirit is made in the image and likeness of our heavenly Father.
Before the fall of Adam, we had sonship with the Father. However, we lost the right to be called sons after the sin committed by Adam and Eve in the garden. We were condemned to eternity in hell. But because of the love of God for His creation, He already had a plan of redemption in place through His son Jesus Christ.
When Christ died on the cross for mankind, God had in essence given us another opportunity to get back into our rightful place, sonship. Whoever accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior is now able to be adopted back into the sonship of the Father in heaven. (Galatians 3:26 – For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.)
Unfortunately many believers do not have the revelation of sonship. We do not have the understanding of the power and position of sonship, and as such miss out on what the Father has purposed us to do, let alone realize the abundant blessing that Christ promised us in John 10:10.
What Is Sonship?
Sonship is the position of being a son to a father. In sonship their is a relationship a son has to his father.
As sons of God, we are in essence His children, and our relationship can be likened to an earthly father with their son, but so much more.
One important thing to note is that, when the bible calls us sons of God, it does not differentiate between man and woman. We are all collectively called sons of God.
How Do We Grow Into Sonship?
To attain and experience true sonship, there are some important steps and truths to understand;
- The very first foundation is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. When we accept Christ, we also receive the precious Spirit of God. Without this very important fact, we simply cannot receive the sonship of God. (Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.).
As a believer, you are now no longer a slave but have now received the right to be called a son of God, and also a heir of all His blessings
(Galatians 4:7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.)
- We are now called sons of God, and have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As we surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit, our desire for the things of the flesh begins to be extinguished as we begin to desire the things of the Spirit more and more.
Romans 8:13-14 – For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall [really and genuinely] live forever. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
- However we still need to renew our minds to the truths of the Kingdom of God that we are now privileged to belong to.
Before accepting Christ as our Lord and Savior, many of us had beliefs and doctrines contrary to the truth of God and His Word.
This therefore means that we need a transformation of the mind. We need to do away with the ways of the world. This can only be done by the grace of God through His Spirit that empowers and strengthens us as we grow in the knowledge and understanding of the Lord.
(Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.)
As our mind is renewed, we begin to receive the revelation of God’s truths in His word, as well as understanding His will and purpose for us.
All of us have been created for a purpose on this earth. Often times we cannot realize it until we walk with and grow in the Lord.
When we accept and begin to walk in God’s purpose for us, we are essentially moving into His perfect will.
At this stage, we are maturing in the Lord, we have a good understanding of our position as sons of God. Our spirit man is growing and strengthened. We now understand the power of God in us, for who is in us is so much greater than who is in the world.
We understand the power and the authority we have over the enemy, and can exercise it because we have come to a belief and acceptance of our true positions as sons of God
Luke 10:19 – Listen carefully: I have given you authority [that you now possess] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and [the ability to exercise authority] over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will [in any way] harm you.
- The Word of God indicates that as believers we possess the mind of Christ. His mind reveals to us the thoughts and purposes of the heart of God.
The Benefits Of Sonship
As we have seen above, when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you enter into Sonship. You are no longer a slave but now receive adoption into sonship.
When the prodigal son came to himself, he realized that he was better off as a servant in his father’s house, than the position he found himself into after squandering all his inheritance was terrible. He had descended to sharing food with hogs that he was hired to feed.
